Description:
1911 WINCHESTER M1890 Pump Action .22 SHORT RF C&R TAKEDOWN Rifle PLINKER

Easy Takedown 3rd Version Rifle in .22 Short Rimfire

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle chambered in .22 Short Rimfire, manufactured in 1911 in New Haven, Connecticut. In the late 1880s, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company asked John Moses Browning to design a replacement for the Model 1873 rifle, since the rim fire version of the Model 1873 had never achieved any great popularity. On June 26, 1888, a patent for the new design was issued to John & Matthew Browning. Under this patent, Winchester created the second repeating slide action .22 rifle ever successfully developed and manufactured, being narrowly edged out by the Colt Lightning small frame carbine.

The Model 1890 was produced in three distinct versions. The first model had a solid frame, a case-hardened receiver, and a fixed rear sight. There were approximately 15,552 of these were produced between 1890 and 1892 with a serial number range between 1 and 15,552. The second model was designed as a takedown rifle. It also had a case-hardened receiver, but this model had an adjustable rear sight.

In April 1919, Winchester eliminated the “18” and “19” from the model names of all of the various models that were in active production. So, after this date, the Model 1890 would have been the Model 90.

The overall condition is nearing fine. Original blue barrel traces and nickel finished frame. Strong action. The bore is frosted with traces of rifling present. This example sports a solid stock and forend. A thin crack is found to the right of the rear trigger guard tang. Sharp markings. Numbers match.
