Description: Charles (Charlie) Slotterbeck Percussion Target Rifle – .40 Caliber Exceptional and highly collectible .40 caliber muzzleloading target rifle built by noted California gunsmith Charles "Charlie" Slotterbeck of Lakeport, California, circa 1875. The Slotterbeck brothers were among the most respected rifle makers in California during the late 19th century. Unlike many gunsmiths of the era who assembled rifles from purchased components, Charlie Slotterbeck manufactured virtually every part of his rifles in-house, including the lock, barrel, stock, and scope. This rifle is a fine example of his craftsmanship. The rifle is chambered for a .40 caliber picket bullet, a projectile named for its resemblance to the pointed top of a picket fence. Rifles of this type were commonly used in 100-yard target competition and Schuetzen-style shooting events popular during the period. Features include: • .40 caliber percussion ignition • 25¾-inch octagonal barrel measuring 1 inch across the flats • Barrel markings: "GAIN TWIST WART STEEL" on the left side and "C. SLOTTERBECK LAKEPORT CAL." on the right side • Double set triggers with an exceptionally light and crisp release • Original scope • No serial number, as manufactured • Weight: 9 lbs. 1 oz. • Distinctively muzzle-heavy balance typical of dedicated target rifles Included with the rifle are several period accessories: • Leather shooting bag • Bullet mold • Powder measure fashioned from a Winchester .45-60 cartridge case • Bullet starter Condition is excellent overall. The stock shows an old, professionally executed refinish, and the rifle remains mechanically sound with all functions operating as intended. For additional information on Charles and the Slotterbeck family of gunsmiths, see California Gunsmiths 1846–1900 by Lawrence P. Shelton, pages 220–238. An outstanding opportunity to acquire a scarce California-made percussion target rifle from one of the American West's most respected 19th-century gunsmiths.
