Description: Joseph Manton Cased Flintlock Sporting Gun – Serial No. 5018 – Original Flintlock – c.1810 Exceptional cased flintlock sporting gun by the legendary English gunmaker Joseph Manton, serial number 5018, manufactured during the first weeks of 1810 and originally sold to A. W. Penrose. Joseph Manton is widely regarded as one of the most influential gunmakers in history, and original examples of his work remain highly sought after by collectors of fine English sporting arms. This gun was built while Thomas Jefferson had only recently left office and Abraham Lincoln was just one year old, placing it firmly in the golden age of English flintlock gunmaking. What makes this example particularly noteworthy is that it remains in its original flintlock configuration more than two centuries after it was built. Many sporting guns of this era were later converted to percussion ignition, making surviving original flintlocks increasingly scarce. Even more remarkable is the survival of its original fitted case, trade label, tools, and shot bag, all evidence of careful stewardship throughout its lifetime. The locks retain excellent function. As is common with sporting guns of this age, the cocks and frizzens have been professionally replaced during the gun's working life. The ramrod is also a replacement. Specifications: • Joseph Manton, London • Serial Number 5018 • Manufactured c.1810 • Originally sold to A. W. It patterns exceptionally well and remains fully capable in the field, delivering excellent performance on pheasants, sharptails, and other upland game birds. An outstanding opportunity to acquire a rare, original-flint Joseph Manton complete with its fitted case, accessories, and documented provenance.
