William Briggs, a native of Bolton, Lancashire, England, was born in 1832, coming to America with his parents at the age of seven. He learned the trade of gunmaker with William Golcher, Second and New Streets, Philadelphia, and established himself on Main Street, Norristown, in 1854. He died in October/November 1889. Briggs was known for manufacturing all metal underhammer rifles and shotguns under his 1859 and 1869 patents. The following is an advertisement from his “Patent Guns” in 1860: “The stock is hollow and is made of malleable iron, the lock and trigger consist of only two pieces, including the guard. In using this gun there is no recoil, owing to the peculiar construction of the stock and it can be discharged as much quicker than any other gun as the ordinary percussion gun can be over the old flint lock kind. It is not subject to get out of order, having one half less pieces in its manufacture than any other gun ever patented, is durable in every particular and will last anyone a lifetime.” This shotgun is chambered in 14 gauge with a steel frame, including the buttstock with a small round brass patch box. The barrel is stamped “William Briggs Norristown PA / Patentet Aug. 13 1859” with a 33-5/8 Military Proofed round barrel, and serial #6. This gun was featured and discussed in the August 2015 edition of “Man at Arms” magazine, page 39-41. Briggs was known for using Harpers Ferry musket barrels on these shotguns. The overall condition is good. Original dark patina. Strong action. The bore is dark but remains in good shape for its age. Markings are sharp. The front ramrod lug is not affixed. Own the original!
