Description:
Serial #668572, .30-06, 24" barrel with a very good bore that has light freckling within the grooves. This is a "Style S" or standard service rifle variant that has a 1917-made Springfield receiver and 6-17 dated "SA" barrel. The barrel and rear sight sight base retain about 70-75% of a later applied matte blue finish that has faded at the muzzle and mixed with mild freckling along the sides of the barrel, as well as some minor impact marks along the outside edge of the muzzle crown. The rear sight itself has mostly turned to a smooth plum-brown patina, while the receiver has a mottled gray-brown patina throughout, with patches of pinprick pitting fore and aft. The straight-handled Springfield bolt retains a mostly dark, brushed blue finish with some silvering along the bearing surfaces and some freckling on the handle. The humped handguard has some minor handling marks in the otherwise fine original oil finish, while the single cross-bolt stock has small handling marks and blemishes in the period reapplied oil finish. Both the inspector markings on the left side of the wrist and the proof stamp underneath were removed at some point; a not uncommon practice by competition shooters at the time. There is a crisp "(Ordnance Bomb) / N.R.A." stamp on the trigger guard just ahead of the floorplate, which has about 40-50% of the original blue remaining and the balance turned either plum-brown, or dull gray. There is a metal oiler in the stock compartment accessed through the finely checkered steel buttplate, and a period worn, but still serviceable leather sling is fitted. These rifles were offered for sale to Army, Navy, and NRA members from 1910 until about 1917, making this a very late production example. The rifle is in very good plus condition overall, and would make a nice representative example for a collection. FFL or C&R;
