Chokes SK/CYL; SK/SK, LOP 14 5/8", DAH 2 1/2", DAC 1 3/8" Serial Number: 31666 You don’t come across a beauty like this every day. This exceptionally gorgeous gun has some of the most highly figured flame walnut I have ever seen on a Model 21. With decorative scroll engraving, a beavertail forend, and double-bordered hand-cut checkering, this gun will catch the attention of every shooter at the club. At first glance, the specifications reveal an unusual configuration. You don’t often encounter 24-inch barrels on a Model 21, although they certainly have their place. In 1956, serial number 31666 left the factory as a 26-inch Skeet Grade. At some point in its life, the original 20-gauge barrels were professionally shortened to 24 inches. Years later, Winchester’s U.S. Repeating Arms Company Custom Shop fitted the gun with a factory 28-inch, 28-gauge barrel set. Correctly marked “Winchester Proof Steel,” these barrels are genuine Winchester/USRAC factory production and fit the receiver with the quality one would expect from the Model 21 Custom Shop. The result is a gun that not only offers the versatility of both 20 and 28 gauge but also exhibits the lively balance and handling qualities many shooters expect from a fine small-bore double. Both barrel sets have mirror bores, retain 99% blue, and tight ribs with a red front bead and silver mid bead. The action locks up tightly with either barrel set, and both exhibit excellent factory-quality fit. The auto safety, single selective trigger, and ejectors all function properly. One of the more interesting aspects of this gun is its Winchester/USRAC 28-gauge barrel set. Many original Winchester Model 21 28-gauge barrel sets utilized 20-gauge exterior dimensions with 28-gauge bores, resulting in a comparatively heavy muzzle and slower handling characteristics. These later USRAC barrels were properly proportioned for the 28 gauge, producing a livelier, better-balanced shotgun while maintaining factory fit and finish. Rather than presenting itself as a museum-piece collector’s gun, this Model 21 occupies a niche that many enthusiasts find even more appealing: a beautifully figured Skeet Grade built to be carried, shot, and thoroughly enjoyed. It shows a few expected light handling marks from its years of careful use, all of which are visible in the detailed photos. That honest evidence of use does little to diminish the appeal of the gun and, in many ways, reinforces what this Model 21 is: a high-condition, highly usable American double with remarkable wood, two-barrel sets, and exceptional shooting versatility. Combining the elegance of Winchester’s finest American double with the lively handling of its later USRAC 28-gauge barrels, this Model 21 represents an exceptional opportunity for the shooter who values both craftsmanship and performance.
