The J.P. Sauer & Sohn Sidelock Drilling represents the pinnacle of pre-war German sporting arms. Built during the golden age of Suhl gunmaking, these deluxe combination guns were crafted for the discerning European sportsman who demanded the versatility of both shotgun and rifle in a single elegant firearm. Featuring superb mechanics, exquisite engraving, and outstanding workmanship, pre-war Sauer drillings remain among the finest sporting arms ever produced.
This example dates to February 1928, as indicated by its 2/28 date code, and is chambered in the classic combination of 12 gauge x 12 gauge over 5.6x35R. It features 27.625-inch barrels with both shotgun barrels choked Full (.043") and Full (.048"), while the rifle barrel offers the accuracy and utility of the 5.6x35R cartridge for small game and vermin. The drilling weighs 8 pounds 3 ounces without the scope and 9 pounds 1.5 ounces with the scope installed.
Built on a deluxe sidelock action, the gun is equipped with cocking indicators, Greener side safety, locking top tang safety, double triggers with a push-set front trigger, barrel side-clips, Greener cross-bolt, and extractor. The front trigger may be pushed forward to function as a precision set trigger for rifle shooting. Mechanically, the drilling is in very good overall condition. The shotgun bores are clear, the rifle bore has strong rifling, the action operates smoothly and locks up tight, and the triggers are crisp.
The receiver is adorned with exquisite game scene engraving surrounded by fine scrollwork. The left sidelock depicts a majestic stag with two hinds in a woodland setting, accompanied by a smaller scene of two ducks landing in a marsh. The right sidelock features a roe buck with three does in a forest scene above a vignette of three pheasants. The maker's name is engraved on the bottom of the action, while the blued steel barrels provide a handsome contrast to the detailed engraving.
The rifle is fitted with a Hensoldt Wetzlar Dialyt-D 4x32 scope mounted in traditional German claw mounts. The optics are clear with a crisp reticle, and the classic claw mounting system allows the scope to be removed and replaced while maintaining zero. The see-through design also permits use of the express sights without removing the scope. The flip-up rear sight is automatically actuated by the rifle selector on the top tang, a hallmark of high-quality German drilling design.
The walnut stock features a right-handed cheekpiece, a beavertail forend, and a horn semi-schnabel forend tip. Skip-line checkering on the pistol grip and traditional checkering on the forend remain sharp, while the stock is finished with a classic black grooved dog's-head buttplate.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
This pre-war J.P. Sauer & Sohn sidelock drilling embodies everything that made German sporting arms famous: refined engineering, artistic engraving, and exceptional versatility. Complete with its original Hensoldt scope and claw mounts, it is a superb example of one of the finest combination guns produced during the golden era of European gunmaking.
