The Walther P.38 was adopted by the German Wehrmacht to replace the costly and labor-intensive P.08 Luger, providing a more modern military sidearm that was faster to manufacture while maintaining excellent battlefield performance. By 1945, the P.38 had become one of Germany’s principal service pistols and saw widespread issue to Heer, Luftwaffe, and other armed formations during the final months of World War II. This late-war example represents the culmination of Walther's wartime production.
Built around Walther's innovative short-recoil locking-block system, the P.38 offered exceptional reliability while introducing the world's first successful military double-action/single-action service pistol. The exposed hammer, decocking safety, and smooth transition from double-action first shot to single-action follow-up shots gave German troops a significant advancement in combat pistol handling. Its fixed barrel alignment and robust lockwork contributed to excellent practical accuracy.
