Description:
The U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor is a single-shot, breech-loading rifle chambered in .50-70 Government. It features a 32.5-inch barrel secured by two steel barrel bands and fitted with a fixed front sight and a rear graduated ladder sight. The rifle uses the trapdoor-style hinged breechblock system characteristic of the Springfield conversions. The lock plate is dated 1863, while the breechblock carries an 1870 date, consistent with post–
Civil War arsenal conversions. The metal components have a blued finish, and the rifle is fitted with a straight-grip wooden stock and forend.

This rifle is used. The bore is described as very good, showing strong rifling. All metal surfaces have been heavily polished and reblued, with light pitting visible near the rear sight. Barrel and breechblock markings remain visible but are faint due to polishing. The stock and forend are solid with light handling wear and no noted cracks or breaks. The metal buttplate shows minor aged pitting consistent with its age. Overall, the firearm retains sound mechanical and cosmetic integrity appropriate for a 19th-century conversion rifle.

Included with the rifle are a steel cleaning rod, a leather sling with swivels, and a brass tag mounted on the top of the stock, possibly denoting unit or rack numbers. The rifle also includes a solid socket bayonet. No serial number is present, as was typical for this model. The combination of dated components and arsenal refinishing reflects its historical configuration as a Springfield conversion arm.
