Description:
EARLY SAVAGE 1899H 20” CARBINE IN DESIRABLE 30-30 CALIBER, #277XXX, MADE 1925. This Model was introduced in 1922 and went through a number of changes through the years. This example is the first type that has the plain curved steel carbine butt plate. Later variants had shotgun butt plates. This model was advertised as a basic, no-frills carbine for outdoorsmen, trappers, hunters etc. The receiver blue was not the high polish as seen on other models, rather it was more of a duller matte blue. The receiver on this one still retains fine blue with most of the wear on the bottom ahead of the lever. The receiver ring retains the early “SAVAGE 1899 MODEL”  marking and all barrel markings are sharp and clear. The barrel retains nearly all the original deep blue and is fitted with original Savage marked buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact, front sight is the early dovetailed blade. Stock and forend are excellent showing little wear or handling. The stock has a single quarter-inch long stress crack at the upper tang- almost all Savage 1899s have cracks in this area as the stock is held to the receiver with a long cross bolt through the stock under the butt plate. Varying heat/cold/humidity etc. will swell and shrink the stock causing these cracks in almost all Model 1899s. This one is barely visible. Tight action, safety tab works correctly, has the early brass cartridge counter on the left side of the receiver and rising pin cocking indicator on the upper tang which works correctly. Good brass rotor spring, tight wood to metal fit, exc. bore. A 101 year-old classic .30-30.  Savage 1899 carbine in very fine condition.
