Description:
Fine Vintage Pair English Percussion Pocket Pistols C. 1835-1850

Offered here for sale and just acquired is a vintage pair of attractive English percussion pocket pistols. This pair fits very well into the 1835–1855 period, with circa 1840–1850 being the most likely date.
The specimens have Birmingham proof marks, indicating commercial production in Birmingham, England. Folding concealed triggers, a popular feature on quality pocket pistols of the 1840s. Screw-off barrels, allowing the barrel to be removed for loading and cleaning—common on better English pocket pistols.
In addition eacvh has sliding safety catches behind the hammers, another hallmark of mid-19th century English percussion pocket pistols. Finely checkered walnut grips and tasteful scroll engraving, typical of Birmingham's higher-quality trade makers.
The lack of a maker's name is not unusual, as many Birmingham gunmakers supplied pistols "in the white" to retailers or produced unmarked examples for the wholesale trade.
Approximately .40 caliber.  Each pistol measures approximately 8 inches overall and is fitted with a 3½-inch round screw-off barrel bearing crisp Birmingham proof marks. The pistols feature folding concealed triggers, period sliding safety catches positioned behind the hammers, and attractively engraved receivers.
The lockplates are unmarked as to maker, although one pistol retains the neatly engraved initials "R.W.", presumably identifying an original owner. The inscription on the companion pistol has largely worn away with age and handling, adding to the authentic character of this well-used but carefully preserved pair.
Both pistols retain their original finely checkered walnut grips, which remain sharp and exceptionally attractive. The metal surfaces exhibit an even, untouched gray patina developed over nearly two centuries, enhancing their antique appeal. Mechanically, the pistols remain in very good condition overall. One hammer displays a superficial scratch or forging flaw along its left side that does not appear to affect function or detract from the overall appearance.
Elegant examples of the classic English gentleman's pocket pistol, these arms represent the type carried discreetly by travelers, merchants, and gentlemen for personal protection during the 1840s and early 1850s. Their compact size, quality workmanship, and pleasing original condition make them highly desirable collector pieces.
