Description:
Classic 18th Century Ketland London Boot Pistol C. 1790-1810
Offered here as a monthly special if this classic 18th century small flintlock pistol made by Ketland of London.
Classic English flintlock boot (or overcoat) pistol made during the late Georgian period and retailed under the famous Ketland name. While many such pistols are simply marked "Ketland" or "Ketland & Co.," they remain among the most recognizable English pocket arms of the era.
A classic late 18th-century English flintlock boot pistol engraved "Ketland" and "London" in flowing script. Measuring approximately 9 inches overall with a round barrel and original ramrod, it retains its attractive hallmarked silver butt cap, a hallmark of better-quality sporting arms of the period. The pistol exhibits an untouched, honest appearance with an even peppery gray patina from generations of use, while remaining complete and solid. The walnut grip has a stable surface crack on the left side but remains structurally sound. Dating to approximately 1790–1810, this is an appealing example from one of England's most famous gunmaking firms, representing the type of elegant personal-defense arm carried by travelers and gentlemen during the Georgian era.
Approx .50 caliber. 9 inches overall with round iron barrel and original ramrod. The Ketland name belongs to one of England's best-known gunmaking families. Although the lock is engraved "London," the pistol was very likely manufactured in Birmingham, where the Ketlands maintained extensive production facilities, then sold through their London business. During this period it was common practice for Birmingham-made firearms to carry a London address.
The presence of a silver butt cap with English hallmarks suggests a quality pistol rather than an inexpensive trade gun. Boot pistols were intended as discreet personal-defense arms.
They were commonly carried by wealthy travelers, gentlemen , stagecoach passengers , merchants transporting money, military officers while traveling.
Because they were expensive luxury items, many featured silver mounts such as this.
The grip crack, while worth stabilizing, would generally be viewed as a conservation project rather than a major restoration and certainly appears display worthy as is.
An early Ketland gentleman’s pistol.
