Description:
Overview
The AYA No. 4 is a highly regarded, hand-fitted Spanish side-by-side (SxS) boxlock shotgun. Patterned after the venerable Westley Richards Anson & Deeley action, 1981 production models from Aguirre y Aranzabal (AYA) offer outstanding durability, traditional handling characteristics, and excellent value.  The AYA (Aguirre y Aranzabal) No. 4 is a traditional, bench-made Spanish side-by-side (SxS) shotgun known for its reliable Anson & Deeley boxlock action, high levels of hand finishing, and exceptional value.

Key Technical Specifications & Features
  • Action Type: Anson & Deeley boxlock with a Purdey double underbolt locking system.
  • Craftsmanship: Built with chopper-lump barrels, disc-set strikers, and traditional leaf springs instead of helical ones.
  • Ejectors: Well-proven Southgate-type ejectors for simplicity and reliability.
  • Weight & Balance: Generally weighs right around 6 lbs. The balance is traditionally centered near the hinge pins, giving it the lively handling feel of a classic English game gun.
  • Stock: Typically features nicely figured walnut, often shaped with a straight (English) grip.
Field Performance & Reception
  • Handling: Reviewers and forum users consistently praise the AYA No. 4 for its pointability and handling characteristics in the field, making it an excellent option for upland bird hunting and rough shooting.
  • Reliability: The mechanical simplicity of the boxlock design makes the gun exceptionally durable, and users report that these firearms continue to function reliably for decades.
  • Fit & Finish: Because the guns are hand-finished, specific details can vary from gun to gun. However, the general consensus is that they provide remarkable craftsmanship and fit for a fraction of the cost of higher-end English doubles.
Market Value & Considerations
  • Pricing: While brand-new AYA models are significantly more expensive, used AYA No. 4s from the late 1970s and early 1980s are often viewed as a bargain. They are frequently valued as some of the best-value SxS shotguns you can buy.
Condition:
Both metal and furnition are in very good condition.  Solid gun and metal shows some thinning.
