Description:
The U.S. Springfield Model 1873 is an antique single-shot Trapdoor rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. It features a 32.5-inch barrel and the hinged breechblock “trapdoor” action characteristic of this model. The receiver is marked with the 1873 date, and the rifle carries serial number 289608. The metal surfaces show a gray patina finish consistent with age, while the stock is a smooth straight-grip hardwood configuration fitted with a crescent metal buttplate.

This rifle is used and displays the typical appearance of a service-issued Springfield from the late 19th century. The bore condition is described as very good, and the action remains strong in operation. Two clear cartouches are present on the left side of the stock, indicating inspection and acceptance markings from its original period of manufacture. The overall patina and markings reflect the rifle’s age and historical character without evidence of modern refinishing or alteration.

Included with the rifle is its complete wood stock assembly and all standard metal furniture as originally configured for the Model 1873 pattern. The combination of a 32.5-inch barrel, .45-70 Government chambering, and original inspection stamps identifies it as a representative example of the U.S. military Trapdoor rifles produced at Springfield Armory during the post-Civil War era.
