Description:
Presenting a real nice 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle in original, condition. Mechanics crisp, excellent hammer has the fine knurled lip. Stacking swivels at the upper band, regular swivel at the trigger guard. Excellent stock showing a patina with a few handling marks. Bears a nice government cartouche “SMP 1882” stamped on the wrist area. Stock bears a fancy script “P” (within a circle) to right trigger guard plate on the stock underside. The model, 73 was the first trapdoor model to bear that proof symbol. Breechblock with its wide round corners, bears the clear stampings U.S./MODEL 1873 at the hinge and the serial number on the upper flat at the back of the receiver. Barrel has the model 1879 long range rear sight with the folding adjustable slide leaf. Front sight held by pin. Iron lock plate with no bevel fits flush with stock and exhibits a spread winged eagle motif front of hammer stamping “U.S./ Springfield” forward of eagle. Barrel exhibits a nice patina (with no pitting) worthy of over 150 years of the aging process. This excellent example retains the original cleaning rod below the stock. The butt-plate is stamped U.S. and S.C. (South Carolina?). From the brass trim on the stock, it was probably used in the “Plains Wars” out West, and perhaps at one time carried by an Indian tribal member.
