Description:
Holland & Holland .375 Magnum Rimless Bolt Action Magazine Rifle w/ Detachable Stock.
Sourced from the original owner, who ordered this rifle new and took delivery in 1988 upon its completion
.
This rifle was made new by Holland & Holland and based on an original commercial Mauser Magnum length action w/ a Slant-Box Magazine made for J. Rigby & Co. circa 1907. This was the original Magnum action design by Mauser, made on request by Rigby, to accommodate Rigby’s .400/.350 rimmed cartridge. This is the first magnum length action made by Mauser and as time went on, many of these original Mauser actions for Rigby’s .400/.350 were re-barreled for the venerable .375 H&H Magnum cartridge due to its popularity. The belted cartridge works well in the slant-box action w/ little alteration. The magazine holds 4 rounds down. The top of the action is round and has never been drilled and tapped for a scope, has the standard thumb-cut on the left wall of the action and the “stripper clip guide” cut into the rear bridge of the action. The top of the front ring is stippled.

The original bolt is numbered correctly to the action and has the original bolt shroud w/ its original flag safety that now has the word “SAFE” inlayed in gold on one side. The action is fitted with a Sako of Finland Mauser 1-stage trigger w/ an additional sliding “stalking” safety to the right of the action’s tang. The bolt handle has been slightly bent to make it easier to manipulate, and the arm of the bolt handle is engraved in a bold foliate pattern.

The one-piece bottom metal has a hinged straddle floor plate w/ an inside-the-bow release. The floor plate is also engraved in a bold foliate pattern surrounding a game scene vignette of a highly detailed bull elephant inlaid in gold. The serial number of the rifle (4202) is engraved on the floorplate’s release button and “4 Cartridges” is engraved on the floor plate at the hinge. The engraving is initialed “KP” next to the gold inlaid elephant, for British engraver Ken Preater who started for Holland’s as an apprentice in the 1950’s. He is known for his game scene and bold scrollwork and was responsible for engraving on many of the Products of Excellence and other special projects during the 1970’s and 80’s.

The rifle has a 24” tapered barrel w/ Holland’s pattern banded rear sight island w/ 1 standing / 2 folding leaf Express sights. The standing sight is engraved “50/100 YDS” and the folding leaves are engraved “200 YDS” and “300 YDS” respectively. The top of the island base is hand-filed. Holland’s pattern banded foresight has a small bead sight blade and Holland’s distinctive forward-folding “Moon” sight/sight protector. Barrel band front sling attachment. The barrel has 1983 London proof marks and is engraved on top of the barrel over the chamber area: “.375 H&H Magnum Rimless” and “Holland & Holland 33 Bruton Street, London” between the rear sight and barrel band. This was Holland’s new London address starting in 1982.

The highly figured walnut stock is detachable w/ a large, slotted screw for the action’s recoil lug. The rear tang of the action has a lip that corresponds to a metal flange set in the stock where it meets the tang. This allows for the barreled-action to be easily removed from the stock and put in a smaller, take-down sized case and has been the standard configuration for Holland & Holland magazine rifles for decades. The stock has a raised Monte Carlo type shadowline cheekpiece for the right hand shooter, a 14 9/16” LOP over a leather covered “Silver’s” type recoil pad, a steel stud sling attachment along the toe line and the gold stock oval is engraved w/ the outline of the Africa continent.

The steel grip cap has a hinged tap door and is engraved in matching large foliate scroll and is color hardened. There is a single recoil bar that is also engraved and color hardened. The pistol grip of the rifle has a point pattern 24 LPI checkering w/ no border on the rear and mullered borders along the front of the checkering. A wrap point pattern checkering w/ mullered border on the forend w/ a horn forend tip.

The rifle is complete in its Maker’s lightweight leather take-down flat case w/ green baize interior and Maker’s leather trade label, a nickel H&H oil-pot, horn handle two piece nickel cleaning rod, and a brush/mop/jag in its pouch (other accessories seen in photo are used as props only and not included in the sale of the rifle).

The rifle has no provision for a scope and is intended to be shot w/ open sights only. The rifle weighs 9 lbs. 3 oz.

The metal remains excellent, retaining most, if not all, of its original black finish. The bore remains excellent. Stock shows some handling marks, but the rifle has been well cared for and has resided most of its life in a gun cabinet.
