Description:
This is an extremely nice, firing Coehorn Mortar that has a 13" long, slightly bell-shaped bronze tube having a 7" wide exterior diameter at the muzzle, with 4 1/2" bore (approximately 120mm). The metal has a dull but attractive yellow-ochre patina throughout with ornate "(Crown) / GR" cypher, and functional vent. The tube has a machine-ground Broad Arrow, and tube weight given in period British Ordnance hundredweight scale: "0 · 3 · 11". This translates to 0 hundredweights, 3 quarter hundredweights, and 11 pounds, or 95 pounds total. Additionally, one of the of the trunnions is marked "OFGW" on the face. The tube rests on a quality laminated wooden sledge base that measures 30" x 11 5/8" x 8 1/2" with four bronze handles and two-tone wooden end panel spacers. The wood, blackened metal fittings, and handles are in excellent, little-used condition. Included with the mortar is a sheet copper powder measure with turned wood base. This is a splendid firing replica of a Coehorn mortar and would make a great decorative piece for a gunroom or study. For at your own risk. We will cover the first $100 for shipping. Antique;
