Description:
A true once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire an exceptionally rare L.C. Smith Monogram Grade 16 gauge shotgun. Manufactured in 1924, this firearm represents one of the finest examples of American double gun craftsmanship from the golden age of side-by-side shotguns.
Opportunities to acquire a Monogram Grade 16 gauge of this rarity seldom present themselves.
The Monogram Grade was a made-to-order, top-tier offering, renowned for its exquisite engraving, premium materials, and hand-fitted construction. Across all gauges, only 306 Monogram Grade shotguns were ever produced between 1892 and 1945, underscoring their exclusivity. Even more remarkable, just 23 Monogram Grade shotguns were produced in 16 gauge, placing this piece among the rarest configurations ever manufactured by L.C. Smith. The last recorded sale of a comparable example dates back to 2013, further highlighting how infrequently these firearms surface on the open market.
This exceptional example was built to order and features 28-inch Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel barrels, rust-blued to a deep, lustrous finish, and mounted on a lightweight Featherweight frame with automatic ejectors. It is further equipped with the desirable Hunter One-Trigger, an advanced and sought-after feature as part of its original configuration, enhancing both functionality and collector interest.
Accompanying this firearm is a factory authentication letter from L.C. Smith, confirming its configuration and further supporting its originality and provenance. Documentation of this nature significantly enhances both collector confidence and long-term investment value.
The stock and forend are crafted from highly figured English or Circassian walnut, displaying remarkable depth and character. Both are meticulously hand-checkered in an intricate ribbon pattern and finished with numerous coats of hand-rubbed oil, resulting in a rich, classic sheen that complements the gun’s overall refinement. Notably, the stock features custom inlays that have not been observed on previously documented or sold examples, adding a unique and highly distinctive element to this already rare firearm.
The engraving is nothing short of extraordinary. The lockplates are adorned with beautifully executed scrollwork, highlighted by finely detailed, lifelike pigeons in flight. The remaining portions of the frame are further enhanced with elegant scroll and floral motifs, while the underside features a finely engraved duck in flight, bringing together a cohesive and masterful display of period engraving artistry.
Included with this offering are six boxes of vintage, period-appropriate 16 gauge ammunition. Due to shipping regulations, the ammunition will be shipped separately where permitted, or arrangements can be made for local pickup. This addition further enhances the display and collector value of the set.
Condition:
This shotgun remains in excellent overall condition for its age. The barrels retain strong original blue with only minor, age-appropriate handling marks. The bores are bright and clean. The wood remains solid with well-defined checkering and only light impressions consistent with careful use. The engraving remains crisp and highly visible throughout. Mechanics are sound, with the action operating properly and ejectors functioning as intended. Prospective buyers are encouraged to review detailed photos and request additional information as needed.
