Description:
Handsome and rare 12 bore James MacNaughton & Sons Round Action shotgun with original nitro steel barrels and stock. Exquisite engraving most likely by Sumner and with the words “MacNaughton” and “Edinburgh” engraved across the top of the balls of the action. Only 308 MacNaughton round actions were manufactured and this one was made circa 1895 - 96. MacNaughton Round Action no.1982 was the Number 2 gun of a pair of Best Ejectors and was made for C.R. Hemingway and delivered in September 1896. Beautifully stocked in English walnut the checkering is crisp and the forearm sports a pendulum lever forearm catch. It also has the signature MacNaughton toggle safety. Refurbished in Scotland several years ago by Graham MacKinlay in Scotland it is a great shooter and with so few made quite a collector’s prize! The gun weighs 6lb 10oz.

The 28” original nitro steel barrels have ejectors and are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid gamestyle rib whuch is inscribed “James MacNaughton. 26 Hanover Street. Edinburgh and Perth.” The right barrel is bored 0.739 with a constriction of 0.008 for a Light Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is bored 0.736 and has a constriction of 0.011 for Quarter choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.022. The blacking on the barrels is in very good condition. There are a few minor marks here and there.

The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made from a stunning and sturdy piece of English walnut. Checkering is the correct flat top diamond pattern and has most likely been refreshed. Stock dimensions are 15-1/8” including spacer and red Silvers-style pad by 1-5/8” by 2-1/2”. Cast off for the right hand shot.

If you have ever shot over a Scottish grouse moor then you already know why you should own this gun. Rare, quick handling, beautifully engraved you will be proud to uncase it at the range and to carry it afield. Rare gun, rare opportunity. Don’t miss out on this chance to own a Scottish classic Round Action.
