Description:
Colt New Navy Revolver .38LC
Serial Number  190024
Navy  Number  12760

This revolver was issued to then Lieutenant Louis McCoy Nulton USN aboard the USS Texas in 1904 and was turned in at the Navy Yard Philadelphia circa 1931 when he was an Admiral.

The Documents (originals in the National Archives) tell a great story.

Nulton was born in Winchester, Virginia in 1869.  He was the son of a former Confederate Captain who served with Stonewall Jackson.  Joseph A. Nulton carried a devotional book in his haversack, A bullet passed through the book and struck Nulton in the leg.  That book is on display in the Stonwall Jackson's Headquarters Museum in Winchester.

Louis McCoy Nulton was born in Winchester in 1869.  He graduated from the US Naval Academy class of 1889.  He served in numerous assignments taking him around the world.  He served at sea during the Spanish American War and Philippine Intervention.  In 1904 while assigned to the USS Texas, Lt. Nulton requested that he be issued a service revolver on a hand receipt.  The request was granted with the provision that he turn it in.  Nulton did so when he was an Admiral.   During that time, Nulton made the landing in Vera Cruz and Haiti.  At the conclusion of WW-l Nulton was the Captain of the USS Pennsylvania, he ferried President Wilson to France.

This revolver is in surprisingly good condition for thirty years of duty ashore and at sea. It is in excellent mechanical condition and the finish is remarkable.  The brown plastic grips have initials carved into them.

The sale includes copies of these documents and several other.
