Description:
1857 Smith Saddle Ring cavalry carbine. S/N 21083 .50 cal, barrel 21 5/8" part round part octogon, with a bright very good bore showing spots of light pitting throughout the strong rifleing. The barrel, barrel band and triggergaurd are a plumb brown. The breech and frame are turning to grey. The markings on the left side of the frame and sideplate are legiable and correct. The american black walnut stock and handgaurd are very good with the usual minor handleing marks from use. The lock has a strong spring and holds well at half and full cock. The trigger pull is crisp. The left side of the wrist has two inspectors marks stamped in. They appear to be "A M" but I am not sure it is in script. The serial number falls within the range of numbers provided by Springfield research services of carbines issued to the 11 Illinois Voluntary Cavalry during the Civil War. photos of any specific area can be provided by request. Overall a very nice example.
