The M-8 Pyrotechnic Signal Pistol represents one of the most recognizable emergency signaling devices issued to U.S. military forces during the Second World War. Manufactured by WMSC (Western Metal Stamping Company), this robust 37mm flare pistol was built to launch visual signal and illumination cartridges for aircraft crews, naval personnel, and ground forces when radio communication was impossible or immediate visual signaling was required.
Unlike commercial flare pistols, this example features the distinctive aircraft locking-lug barrel, allowing the launcher to be securely mounted into compatible aircraft flare ports for in-flight deployment. Its break-action, single-shot design is exceptionally rugged, combining a smoothbore steel launch tube with an exposed hammer and simple manual operation that proved dependable under harsh combat conditions.
Visible markings include the triangular WMSC manufacturer's logo above the clearly stamped "U.S. PROPERTY" and "PISTOL PYROTECHNIC M-8" designation, all remaining sharp and legible. The original black checkered composition grips with diamond escutcheons are present, while the military finish exhibits an attractive, honest patina developed over decades of preservation rather than restoration.
