DON’T BE SHY. ANY REASONABLE AND REALISTIC OFFER WILL BE CONSIDERED

Every now and then, a Colt SAA comes along that carries a story, a legacy, or a provenance I can proudly share. In this case, the story is simpler: I don’t know much about its past, but its condition and craftsmanship speak louder than any history could. I purchased this revolver late last year and briefly considered keeping it for myself. The truly special ones have a way of convincing me to hold onto them, which is not ideal for a dealer. So, with some reluctance, I’m offering this beauty to its next steward.

At 124 years old, this Colt Single Action Army remains in remarkably fine condition. The engraving is not factory, which tells us it was added sometime after its 1902 production, along with the nickel finish. Whoever commissioned the work chose their artisan wisely.

A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

This revolver began life as a 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army, chambered in .45 Colt and fitted with the classic 5.5-inch Artillery barrel. What sets it apart today is the full-coverage hand engraving, executed with exceptional skill. The scrollwork flows seamlessly across the frame, barrel, and cylinder, transforming the revolver from a working sidearm into a genuine showpiece.
The nickel-plated finish adds depth and brilliance, catching light in a way that highlights every engraved detail. It’s a striking combination, ornate yet tasteful, bold yet refined.

Condition That Impresses

This revolver has clearly been cherished.
  • The bore is bright and shiny
  • Rifling remains sharp and crisp
  • The cylinder is clean
  • Timing is correct
  • Lockup is tight
  • Well-preserved metal and engraving

These are qualities that stand out on any early Colt — and they are especially impressive on one that has lived through more than a century of ownership.

A Colt Worthy of the Finest Collections

This 1902 SAA represents a blend of history, artistry, and American heritage. Whether displayed, collected, or simply admired, it embodies the enduring legacy of Colt’s most iconic revolver. Examples of this quality are increasingly difficult to find at a reasonable price, and pieces like this are not merely purchased, they are passed on.

Because this revolver came without its original box, which is completely normal for 1st Generation Colts, and because I considered keeping it for myself, I had the custom display case shown in the photos made to properly showcase this beautiful SAA. The case is constructed entirely of wood, fitted with leather handles, and features a lockable hasp with a matching padlock and key. It is laser?engraved on both the exterior and the underside of the lid: the top identifies the revolver, while the interior engraving provides a concise history of the Colt Single Action Army. (The artwork for both the outside and inside of the are shown as the last 2 photos.)
