Description:
.303 British caliber, 24" nitro proofed barrel. Lee-Speed Metford Sporting, Guard No. 19958. This example was
produced originally by Birmingham Small Arms in 1896 as a Lee-Speed
sporting rifle with Metford rifling and sighted for 1,000 yards. It
bears the standard engraving pattern familiar to this model. It was
purchased on 24 Dec 1896 from the Army & Navy Co-operative Society
store by Augustus Charles Baillie Esq. Sometime thereafter, the rifle
was re-barreled with a BSA heavy target barrel in the Enfield rifling
pattern compatible with MKVII-type .303 ammunition and was re-sighted
for 300 yards. Colonel Augustus Charles Baillie earned a DSO during
the South African War (Second Boer War) and commanded the 2nd
Battalion, 2nd Lovat Scouts during the Great War. His complete
biography as well as copies of the A&NCS ledger entries from the
University of Glasgow follow.   ANTIQUE
