Description:
NICELY ENGRAVED Antique CHARLES LANCASTER Double Barrel PERCUSSION Shotgun

LONDON MADE Side by Side HUNTING/SPORTING Gun

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Charles Lancaster Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, manufactured in England around the 1850s-1860s. Charles William Lancaster (1820-1878) was a known gunmaker working out of London. Birmingham and London were the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.

During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. This 10 gauge fowling piece was made in a great gauge to go after high flying geese and ducks. Its mid-length barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.

The overall condition is good. An original patina is present on the damascus twist barrels, with the other metal parts having been refinished in nickel. The bores are bright and smooth, slightly dimming towards the muzzle. Well defined floral engravings. Excellent actions. Nicely checkered wrist and forend. This example sports a solid stock with light dings and average handling wear. Hunting scene engraved trigger guard. Numbers on the barrel and trigger guard match. Legible markings.
