For your consideration, we present this special order Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle in caliber 38 WCF aka 38-40, one of my personal favorite and very accurate calibers. This rifle was ordered with a 4" longer than standard 28" octagon barrel. All other features are standard: full magazine, plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, crescent butt with steel butt plate, German silver blade front sight, sporting rear sight, blued and case hardened finish. Cody Museum email sheet (last picture) verifies configuration and will be given to the buyer. Per the big Winchester book by George Madis, only 1 of every 1200 rifles in this model had longer than standard barrels, making this a scarce specimen.
CONDITION: All metal surfaces are a dark patina with some staining and crust that I chose not to clean off for fear of ruining the rifle. The stocks show expected nicks, dings, compression dents and scratches expected of a 120+ year old rifle that likely saw ranch use, however are free of splits and cracks. Butt stock has an old filled swivel hole in the bottom edge. There are spots of shallow pitting on the metal. The action is butter smooth and has a properly working half cock safety. The bore remains very good despite the exterior finish, having typical black powder fouling but no major rings or bulges and fairly good rifling; in my opinion, a 6.5 of 10. I have shot this with Winchester Western ammunition, and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly, and held fairly tight groups at 25 yards, tight enough to put some meat in the freezer had I not been killing paper. An honest, used but not abused rifle with a cool look to it due to the extra long barrel.
