Description:
Rare & Desirable Model 1878 Colt Frontier Double Action Sheriff's Model Revolver with Main & Winchester, San Francisco Holster & Factory Letter, .44-40 WCF, mfg. 1882 with 4" ejectorless barrel. A very scarce factory short barreled 1878 Colt in desirable blued finish/etched panel configuration in very fine original condition. Overall the pistol shows a fairly strong amount of original bluing within protected areas of the frame with the balance thinned to a blue/gray patina throughout. Surfaces are smooth and edges are all very sharp. Bright fire bluing is still visible on the trigger rear surface of the hammer. Original early production style checkered wood grips fit perfect with no chips or cracks and retain 60% factory varnish. Very nice, clear, and full original "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" acid etched barrel with sharp two-line address, "44CF" marked triggerguard, small "44" under the barrel, and serial number "8259" stamped on the butt with partial "59" on rear face of cylinder. Full original blade front sight with original hammer, trigger, loading gate, screws, and cylinder pin. Factory lanyard delete as nearly all sheriff's models had. Action is perfectly crisp and smooth and functions flawlessly in both single and double action. Cylinder locks up tight and on time when trigger is pulled. Excellent bright and shiny bore with sharp rifling and just light blackpowder frosting throughout. Accompanying the gun is a very rare Main & Winchester, San Francisco, California tooled double loop holster that fits the gun like a glove. Note there is no ejector impression in the leather! This holster has always had a sheriff's model in it. Holster is in very good condition overall with one sturdy repair on the back near the top loop. Main & Winchester was established during the California Gold Rush in 1849 and became legendary for their saddles and Western leather goods. Included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .44 caliber, 4" barrel, blued finish, stocks not listed, shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company, Chicago, Illinois on March 14th 1882 as part of a six gun shipment. Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. was a major hardware dealership that sold guns, knives, and merchandise across the country through their popular catalog. An exceptional 1878 Colt sheriff's model that will be a highlight among any fine Colt collection!
