Carl Gustafs 1917 Rifle featuring a 23" barrel is almost certainly a Swedish Mauser Model 96/38 (m/96-38) short rifle. Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori originally manufactured this firearm in 1917 as a full-length, 29-inch barrel M96 long rifle. However, to adapt to shifting tactical needs during the build-up to World War II, the Swedish military recalled thousands of these long rifles to arsenal-shorten their barrels to 23 inches (officially 23.1").
