Description:

Offered is an exceptionally fine Marlin Model 28 Hammerless Slide Action Shotgun, serial number 8583, manufactured during the early production years of the Model 28 series. Produced from approximately 1913 through 1922, the Model 28 was Marlin's first successful hammerless pump shotgun and represented one of the finest American sporting arms of its era.
This shotgun is a particularly attractive collector's example, retaining an estimated 93% original factory finish with outstanding original wood and a scarce factory raised matted rib barrel.
The receiver retains the vast majority of its original rust blue finish with only light, honest handling wear. The edges remain crisp, screw holes are sharp, and there is no indication of refinishing or excessive polishing. The barrel and magazine tube retain excellent original blue with sharp, fully legible factory barrel markings.
One of the highlights of this shotgun is its factory raised matted rib, a configuration encountered much less frequently than the standard plain or matted barrel. The rib is straight, correctly fitted, and terminates cleanly at the muzzle with the original front bead in place.
The walnut stock and matching checkered forearm are equally impressive. The buttstock displays unusually attractive feathered figure and mineral streaking that greatly exceeds the wood normally found on standard-grade Model 28s. The original finish remains intact with only scattered handling marks accumulated over more than a century of careful ownership. The checkering on both stock and forearm remains sharp and well defined.
The shotgun retains its original hard rubber Marlin buttplate, and the stock does not appear to have been shortened or altered. Screw heads throughout the gun remain in excellent condition, suggesting minimal disassembly over its lifetime.
Features include:
  • Serial Number: 8583
  • 12 Gauge
  • Factory raised matted rib barrel
  • Pistol-grip walnut stock
  • Original hard rubber buttplate
  • Excellent original checkering
  • Excellent original blue finish
  • Takedown configuration
  • Attractive figured walnut throughout
The action operates smoothly, and the shotgun presents as a well-preserved, honest collector firearm that has escaped the refinishing and alterations commonly encountered on early Marlin pump shotguns.
Finding an original Model 28 in this level of preservation has become increasingly difficult, particularly one equipped with a factory raised matted rib and such attractive original walnut. This shotgun would make an excellent addition to any advanced collection of early American sporting arms, Marlin firearms, or classic pump shotguns.

My selling recommendation
If I were listing this gun, I would ask $2,195 with the expectation of accepting $1,900–2,050. The combination of originality, early production, excellent condition, and the factory raised matted rib makes it a premium collector example.
One suggestion before listing: include a close-up photograph of the raised rib profile near the receiver and another at the muzzle. Many buyers will initially assume it is a standard matted barrel. Showing the rib's height and profile clearly will help distinguish it and justify the asking price.
