UNUSUAL AND SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY IS THIS WHITNEY-REMINGTON STYLE ROLLING BLOCK SADDLE RING CARBINE, .45-70, WITH CLEAR “ESA” CARTOUCHE IN THE WRIST OF THE STOCK ON THE LEFT SIDE, #51XXX. As is not unusual with Whitney carbines, this one is unmarked aside from the “45” caliber designation on the barrel top ahead of the receiver ring. The ESA in an oval and one very small (tiny) script two letter stamping inside a square outline behind the lower tang are the only other markings. 22" barrel and receiver are an aged gray. The barrel is fitted with the correct military folding leaf sight with a typical carbine front sight blade. Stock and forend are excellent and matching in color and grain. The action is tight and the bore shows strong rifling, is fairly bright with scattered roughness. I put a .45-70 cartridge in this one and it fit correctly. Whether this was a trials gun of some kind or some other government purchase is a mystery. I am aware of a few other ESA marked carbines over the years, but nothing I am aware of has come to light about them or their use. Most of these Whitney carbines went south of the border and to Latin Amebrica. They don’t turn up often. A rare carbine by itself and unusual with the inspector stamping.
