Payment Types Accepted: Personal Check or Money Order Description: Offered is an exceptionally honest and mechanically sound Gallager Patent Civil War percussion breechloading cavalry carbine manufactured by Richardson & Overman of Philadelphia and marked with the Gallager Patent, July 17, 1860. This example bears serial number 13954 and retains the original military configuration. The Gallager was one of the principal percussion breechloading carbines issued to Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Approximately 22,000 were produced under government contract and saw widespread service from 1863 through the end of the war. Its unique tilting breech and brass cartridge system make it one of the most recognizable and desirable Civil War cavalry carbines. This example remains in very honest, untouched condition. The metal retains a pleasing smooth brown and gray military patina with sharp edges and crisp markings throughout. There is no evidence of aggressive cleaning, refinishing, or restoration. The receiver is clearly marked: GALLAGER'S PATENT JULY 17TH 1860 and MANUFACT'D BY RICHARDSON & OVERMAN PHILADA with matching serial number 13954. Mechanically, the action functions properly. The breech locks tightly with excellent alignment and exhibits none of the looseness commonly encountered on well-used Gallager carbines. The hammer, trigger, and breech mechanism all operate correctly. The barrel remains in very good condition with strong rifling and a remarkably clean bore for a Civil War percussion arm.
