The quintessential American rimfire pistol. Designed by John Moses Browning and finalized by Colt’s engineers F. Chadwick and G. Tansley, the Woodsman was first introduced in 1915 and was to be in production in various forms until 1977. The pistol was the first successful semi-automatic .22 rimfire gun to be offered, earlier attempts had been problematic, but Mr. Browning got it right by using an angled magazine to ensure the rimmed cartridge would not ‘rimlock’ onto its predecessor. The Woodsman has remained a favorite with shooters and collectors since its introduction. This example, serial number MT8173, manufactured in 1940, is a Match Target model. It retains 99% original factory finish and has a mirror bore. It’s fitted with elephant ear grips which have excellent checkering, and the target trigger is exceptional and breaks cleanly. Included with this match target is a vintage H.H. Heiser Match Target holster, two Colt Woodsman magazines, and one Colt Woodsman match target magazine.
