Description:
Winchester Model 1886 23 ¾” Octagonal .45-90 WCF Lever Action Rifle - Antique
This is a Winchester 1886 Lever Action Rifle in 45-90WCF. It is in a standard configuration with a modified full 23 ¾” Octagon barrel and magazine. It has a buck horn rear barrel sight and front sight is a brass bead blade sight. The butt stock and fore stock are walnut with a crescent butt plate

Condition:
This 1886 Winchester is in good condition overall with traces of the refinished blue. As mentioned above, the barrel and magazine tube have been shortened to 23 ¾”. It is probable that this modification was done some time ago since it appears period.  It has a grey/brown patina on the balance with minor pitting in a few places and some moderate wear especially along the barrel. The legends are good to fine with the address on the barrel illustrating some wear. The screws are in good shape for the most part with some showing some showing slot wear. The walnut stocks are in good condition with some minor chips at the top of the upper tang. The stocks also have dings and nicks in a few places especially on the right lower side of the butt stock with some deeper dings. There are two holes drilled in the bottom of the stock for a sling swivel. The bore is mostly bright with light pitting and defined rifling rating a +7. This rifle cycles a cartridge from the magazine tube into the chamber well and locks up firmly and ejects strongly.

This rifle has been modified from the standard 26" barrel to 23 ¾”. With the shorter barrel it becomes a handy rifle weighing 8.6lbs compared to a standard Winchester 1886 rifle with a full octagon barrel weighing 9.6lbs. This was probably done to reduce the weight of the rifle for carry purposes. The stock shows that it once had sling swivels installed also pointing to carrying this rifle in the field.  We have shot this rifle with smokeless 45-90 rounds using 300 grain jacketed bullets. We ran three cartridges from the magazine tube into the receiver firing and ejecting the empty cases. This rifle operated well and the shots were accurate out to 50 yards. The fired cases were in good shape with centered primer hits and at the right depth. This was a function test no attempted was made to determine how accurate the rifle is. This is a nice antique Winchester 1886 in the popular 45-90WCF and although modified is certainly shooter grade capable of being put back to work. Being an antique made in 1891 it can be shipped directly to the buyer.
