Description:
NSN, .32 Caliber, 1 3/8" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some faint freckling in a few spots. This is a very handsome little, high quality late 18th / early 19th British pistol that has an overall mottled gray patina throughout, with excellently rendered engraved decorative accents including shield, flags, and plant vignette panels on either side of the rounded frame. The left side has the maker’s name, "SMITH", while the right side of the frame has "LONDON" in roman capitals. The pistol is equipped with a functional sliding safety, and the action locks firmly at both half and full-cock, with the folding trigger deploying smartly at the latter. The checkered bag-shaped walnut grip is in very good condition with some minor handling marks scattered throughout, and mild flattening of the checkering points. What looks like a 20th century inventory number is stamped into the darkly tarnished lozenge-shaped wrist escutcheon: "(star) 2775." There were several Smiths operating as gunmakers in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so we are unable to pin down a specific make, but this is a fine example of a diminutive British muff pistol, and would make a great addition to any collection.
