When the Civil War began, both sides were desperate for small arms. Arms purchasers and speculators scoured Europe and England for small arms available for purchase. The conflict happened during a period of great firearms advancement throughout the world, but particularly in the United States. The primary transition was from muzzle-loaders to breech-loaders, from loose ball and powder to self-contained cartridges. Dozens of different small arms, namely cavalry carbines, were used in the conflict. The war saw obsolete technology fighting next to the cutting edge, and both sides needed it all. Imagine the logistical nightmare of supplying so many different types of ammunition! Similar to the British Patterns 1853 & 1856 rifle and carbine, though lacking British markings. This example is marked “A.E.”, and maker is unknown, but we believe this might be Spanish given Spain’s adoption of the British Enfield family of weapons such as the Patterns 1853 and 1856. Spain acquired some of these directly from the UK but also had some domestic production. Dated 1863 in addition to the A.E. markings. Made for a saber bayonet. The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina. The action would be functional but for the mainspring. The bore is dim with good rifling. The stock has some minor splits and remains solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
