This authentic Cold War-era East German military ammunition crate represents a complete issue package of 7.62×39mm Übungspatronen M43-Üb, the specialized reduced-range training ammunition developed for the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA). Manufactured on June 15, 1987, the crate remains accompanied by its original factory packaging configuration, including the instructional sight-adjustment sheet and all twenty sealed blister packs containing a total of 1,400 cartridges.

Unlike conventional M43 ball ammunition, these cartridges utilize lightweight plastic practice projectiles engineered to significantly reduce effective range while maintaining reliable cycling in service rifles and light machine guns chambered for 7.62×39mm. This allowed soldiers to conduct realistic live-fire exercises on smaller military training ranges while minimizing danger areas and ammunition costs. The enclosed instruction sheet provides corrected rear sight settings for East German MPi-KM assault rifles and LMG-K light machine guns, compensating for the unique trajectory of the reduced-range practice ammunition.

The exterior crate retains its original logistics label identifying the contents as "7,62mm M43-Üb", with the notation "OL STAHLH." indicating steel-cased ammunition and "1400 Stück" confirming the original quantity of 1,400 cartridges. The military inventory designation "KIV" remains prominently displayed on the label, preserving the crate's authentic East German arsenal markings and logistical history.

Opening the crate reveals its remarkably complete original military packing arrangement. The factory blister packs remain neatly organized inside the wooden chest, accompanied by the original German-language ballistic instruction card. Together, these surviving components provide collectors with an exceptionally well-preserved example of late Cold War Warsaw Pact military packaging and ammunition logistics exactly as issued to NVA training units during the final years of the German Democratic Republic.

Complete East German training ammunition crates are encountered far less frequently than standard Warsaw Pact ball ammunition, particularly when retaining their original internal packaging, paperwork, and full cartridge count. Their association with NVA training doctrine, distinctive blister-pack packaging, and unusual lightweight practice ammunition make them highly desirable to collectors specializing in Cold War militaria, Warsaw Pact equipment, East German military history, and surplus ammunition.
