This authentic pre-World War II Greek military ammunition crate was manufactured in 1932 by Poudrerie et Cartoucherie Hellénique (PCH), the renowned Greek Powder & Cartridge Company responsible for supplying the Hellenic Armed Forces during the interwar period. Built to transport a complete combat load of 1,400 rounds of 7.95mm Greek (7.92×57mm Mauser / 8mm Mauser) ammunition, this crate represents an increasingly scarce survivor from one of Europe's most turbulent military eras. PCH was Greece's principal ammunition manufacturer and produced both domestic military ammunition and export contracts throughout the 1930s.
The original factory stenciling remains visible on the exterior, identifying the crate's military specifications. The markings include the original ammunition quantity of "1400", the Greek caliber designation "7.95", the manufacturer code "PCH", the production year "1932", and the individual crate or inventory number "2947". These surviving markings provide excellent provenance while preserving the crate's unmistakable military appearance.
Constructed from thick hardwood using durable finger-jointed corners, the crate features original rope carrying handles, integrated wooden skids that elevate the box off damp ground, and a heavy removable lid secured by screws. Designed for repeated transport through military depots and field conditions, these crates were engineered to survive years of rugged service while protecting thousands of cartridges from moisture and physical damage.
Unlike many surviving military ammunition boxes that have lost their markings or been repurposed after service, this example retains its original military identity and remains an outstanding display piece for collectors of Greek militaria, Mauser rifles, early twentieth-century military logistics, and pre-WWII ammunition containers. Its large size, early 1932 production date, and complete original ammunition capacity make it an exceptionally desirable collector's crate.
