Description: General Specs: John Dickson & Son , 1879, .500 Black Powder Express, 7lbs. 5oz., LOP 14 3/8" Serial Number: 3530 Few Victorian sporting rifles combine historical interest, mechanical distinction, and genuine field presence as successfully as this John Dickson & Son falling-block rifle. Built in Edinburgh in 1879 and chambered in the formidable .500 Black Powder Express, serial number 3530 is a handsome example of the great British single-shot sporting rifle at the height of its development. The rifle is built around the renowned Henry patent falling-block action, with “Henry’s Patent A No. 84” engraved on the top of the breech. Alexander Henry’s action earned an exceptional reputation for strength, simplicity, and reliability, and its use by John Dickson & Son brings together two of Scotland’s most respected names in sporting arms. The underlever operates the breechblock with the solid, purposeful feel expected from a best-quality Victorian rifle. The 28-1/2-inch barrel demonstrates the quality of work for which Dickson was known. It features an integral top rib, a dovetail-mounted front post, and a folding V-notch express rear sight. Most importantly, the bore rates an excellent 9.5 out of 10, remaining bright with strong, well-defined rifling. The action is decorated with crisp English scroll engraving, including especially fine work across the top tang. Areas protected from handling have retained factory original vivid case color, particularly behind the hammer, within the trigger guard, and beneath the underlever. Across the more exposed surfaces, the colors have mellowed into a deep and attractive period patina. The falling block retains its nitre-blue finish and shows one visible mark in the steel, photographed for complete disclosure. The screws remain in very good condition, and the single trigger is crisp. The capped pistol-grip stock has attractive figure, well-executed checkering, and very good wood-to-metal fit. Honest handling marks are present, with the most noticeable concentrated near the forend, but the wood retains a handsome oil finish. Additional details include a horn grip cap with an engraved retaining screw, an unengraved silver oval ready for the next owner’s initials, and a traditional sling eye mounted beneath the stock. A checkered steel buttplate with widow’s-peak extension with scroll engraving finishes the rifle in classic Victorian fashion. This is more than an impressive object for the gunroom. It is a mechanically fascinating, beautifully made sporting rifle with an exceptional bore, desirable maker, distinguished action, and one of the most evocative chamberings of the black-powder express era. Whether acquired as the centerpiece of a collection of Scottish arms or enjoyed by an experienced handloader and black-powder rifleman, this 1879 Dickson offers history, craftsmanship, and character in equal measure. Please enjoy the photographs and complete specifications below. As with any antique black-powder express rifle, ammunition and loading should be selected only after appropriate inspection and consultation with a qualified gunsmith experienced with vintage British rifles.
