Description: This is a M1854 Austrian Lorenz Short Rifle referred to as the American Export Model on pages 94-95 in the excellent reference book , European Arms in the Civil War. The rifle is a little over 43" with a 28" barrel. The lock plate is marked 855 (Austrian for 1855} and the Austrian eagle proof. The initials AT appear appear on the right rear butt. The sight base shows graduations to 1000 and below that appears an Austrian proof and LW 18788. ILVD over 4257 appears on the butt plate tang. The number 13 appears on some small parts. The bore is very dark and measures a .62 caliber. I cannot see any rifling. There is a stamp on the stock to the rear of the trigger bar and it could be a CS or C something. The metal parts have a smooth brown patina. The stock is good overall. There is some missing wood to the rear of the lock in addition to some age cracks. Around 7000 of these were imported for the North. The slide for the rear sight is missing as most are. The Rifle Shoppe sells to parts that have to be finished. The ramrod is missing but S&S Firearms sells the Lorenz ramrod for the long rifle that can be cut down. The action works on both cocks. If you want an original and documented Civil War import Short Lorenz on a budget, here it is! Price: $495.00 Antique: Yes |
