This is a graceful and elegantly proportioned pistol that retains much of the original browned finish on the barrel which has a wedding band transition at the breech, understated flower engraving is present at the tips of the breech flats, deeply struck British proofs, geometric borders at the breech and scrollwork along the barrel tang. Spots of mild freckling are present along the barrel, heaviest at the breech around the vent. The lock has a mottled gray and plum-brown patina with tastefully engraved decorative borders, as well as athe maker’s name in the center: "KETLAND / & Co." The lock is fully functional and locks firmly at both half and full-cock. The pin-fastened walnut stock has a lovely relief carved surround for the tang that ends in scallop shell vignette just above the helmet, flag, cannon, and shield motif wrist escutcheon. The brass butt cap has a grotesque face capstan with engraved flower and geometric patterns running up the stirrups along the sides, and an elaborate pierced brass sideplate with martial panoply is present opposite the lock. The trigger guard has a flower vignette in the center of the bow and terminates in an acorn finial. The brass ramrod thimble and tailpipe have a slighter darker tarnish than the other brass fittings, and the original brass-tipped ramrod is still present. William Ketland & Co. was a well known British gunmaker that operated in Birmingham and London (1789 & 1798) and this is a splendid example of their work that survives in very good-fine condition.
