Description: Rare 19th Century French Dumonthier Cane Gun Up for sale and just acquired is one of the finest classic items of its era. The Dumonthier cane gun is one of the most sought-after concealed firearms of the Victorian era. It measures 35 inches overall, and falls squarely within the typical dimensions of authentic late-19th century Dumonthier cane guns, which were generally made between 33 and 36 inches in length. History Joseph-Célestin Dumonthier was one of France's most inventive 19th-century gunsmiths. He operated in Paris and became famous for producing ingenious "system" weapons—combination and disguised arms—including: Cane guns Dagger-pistols Sword canes Combination hunting weapons His cane gun design was patented in 1876 and became one of the finest European examples of the genre. They were marketed primarily to wealthy gentlemen as discreet self-defense weapons during an era when walking canes were an essential part of formal dress. Unlike many earlier percussion cane guns, the Dumonthier design is surprisingly sophisticated. This specimen features a Twist-and-pull breech loading hidden folding trigger  . A horn or stag antler handle. An all wood shaft with steel barrel concealed inside the cane. Appears to be chambered for approximately 12 mm centerfire (roughly comparable to a .410 smoothbore). Collectors prize Dumonthier cane guns because they combine mechanical ingenuity with excellent French craftsmanship and rarity .Original examples retaining the horn handle, original cane finish are valuable. descriptions note that the original muzzle plug is often missing, making complete examples especially desirable. This Dumonthier cane gun was most likely manufactured between 1876 and about 1895. This specimens has no  markings as to Dumonthier’s manufacture so it made be an early manufactured specmen. It may have been made with just proof marks but these may have worn off. The gun is fully operational however in two or three areas the original cane has split. It was expertly repaired by our gunsmith/restorer. In fair to very good condition still a very difficult to obtain highly collectible piece. Thanks for your bid.
