Description:
This is one of those "hen's teeth" kind of guns. This gun is out of the estate of a WWII veteran and collector who passed away in 2001. The following information is taken directly out of his notes for this gun:
"Rifle Serial Number 46304.
Rifle receiver manufactured June/July 1940. The marking on the front receiver leg includes the heat lot number "REP 7" and drawing number "D28291-1" indicating revision 1. Referencing rifle serial number "18752", this rifle never received the welded seventh round modification.
The bolt is marked "D 28287-1" and heat lot "J7". This is the correct bolt.
The barrel has no visible markings. I diid not attempt to remove the handguard. Throat gauges 5.0
The operating rod drawing number "D35382-1-SA" has the square cut corner and straight cut at rear which is correct for this rifle.
There is a problem with the longer operating rod spring. It is too long and does not allow the bolt to latch fully rearward. It cannot be considered correct. The sheet spring appears correct.
The gas trap cylinder is not fluted, which again is a correct feature. Drawing number "D-28289-1". Muzzle plug is unmarked. There is a "1" on top behind front sight.
Unmarked follower rod with round configuration.
Bullet guid with angular cuts marked "B8875SA".
Follower arm is correct with its single bevel.
Follower and slide marked with correct "2".
Operating rod catch assembly is unmarked.
Correct flush nut rear sight with correct early knurled knobs. Aperture marked "8868-1".
Sight cover marked "B8872" is possible replacement. Sight adjustments are crisp and positive.
Arched wing front sight. Ok but should be flat wings.
Trigger housing marked "D 28290 SA"
Hammer marked "C46008-1SA"
Safety marked "C 46015-4" which would be correct.
Milled trigger guard without concentric rings. Guard interferes with floor plate and doe not cock hammer when swung forward. Marked "C46025-1SA"
Walnut buttstock with its two encircled "P" proofs under grip and tiny "S" in the barrel channel, is a replacement. The finish is notably coarse with fine sanding marks and there is the same type issued under the solid buttplate as rifle 18572. Long barrel channel. The stock is cutout under the buttplate with a large round hole on top over a smaller round hole.
The rear handguard does not have the relief cut on the right rear. The grooved clip does not stand proud of the wood. This handguard appears to be a replacement.
Front handguard has the correct lower edge profile.
Correct grooved lower band with relief cuts.
Front handguard ferrule has the correct lip.
The wood finish, except as mentioned, has the looi of period correct finish. The metal finish is the same as rifle 18752.
The bore is in the same condition as number 18752 and the wear patterns do not add up except as an expert and attractive restoration."
Upon disassembly of this gun, it would appear that there have been no modifications or changes to this gun since his inital notes were taken. We might add that the receiver appears to be have been profesionally or arsenal refinished a long time ago, but the markings are nice and sharp. All in all, this is an impossible to find gun, even as a restoration. Serial number is 46304
