This Dragoon falls in the approximate Second Model serial number range of 8000-10700 and appears to be transitional in that it has a First Model type cylinder with round cylinder stops. Only an estimated 2,700 Second Model Dragoons revolvers were manufactured by Colt around 1850 and 1851 compared to 7,000 of the First Model Dragoons and 10,500 Third Model Dragoons, according to pages 84-86 of “Flayderman’s Guide” (9th Edition). They are thus by far the scarcest of the primary Colt Dragoon revolvers. At least part of an Army contract for 1,000 revolvers dated February 4, 1850, was filled with 2nd Dragoon Revolvers. The revolver has the distinctive square-back brass trigger guard found on the second model, although it has round cylinder stops found on the 1st Model Dragoons, making this example made right about the time it was changing from the first model over to the second model. Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War era Colt Dragoon! The overall condition is good. Original dark patina. The action is strong. Good bore for its age, maintains a nice shimmer, with serviceable rifling. Solid replacement grip. Numbers match, though the barrel wedge is not numbered. Brass filled dovetail where a rear sight was once located. A scarce transitional Dragoon demonstrating Colt’s penchant for using every bit of his new-old stock, even early on! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-3/8 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
