Description:
LETTERED 1898 Antique COLT Model 1878 FRONTIER ARMY .44-40 Revolver 4-3/4”

NEW ORLEANS SHIPPED “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER”

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Lettered Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver, made in 1898 in Hartford, Connecticut. This model is often referred to as the “Frontier” or the “Double Action Army” revolver. The Model 1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt’s factory manager, and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. It followed closely on the heels of the smaller Colt Model 1877, and chambered a larger variety of cartridges. Despite the versatility, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the Model 1878 made between 1878 through 1907.

Colt’s serial number dating system puts this gun as being made in 1898, though the accompanying factory letter states this revolver was shipped on October 2, 1899, to A. Baldwin & Company in New Orleans, Louisiana, in .44 caliber, with a 4-3/4 inch barrel, and nickel finish. This is one of a reported 1,129 standard Model 1878 revolvers shipped in .44-40 caliber with a 4-3/4 inch barrel and nickel finish, according to figures on page 261 of Colt’s Double-Action Revolver, Model of 1878 by Don Wilkerson. “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” is marked on the left of the barrel.
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish is preserved. Some fire blue finish remains on the hammer and trigger. Numbers match. The action is excellent in both double and single action modes. Bright bore with strong rifling. Markings are sharp. Both grips are in very good shape and remain seated firmly. This would have been a great gun to carry in the Wild West to go along with your Winchester chambered in the same caliber!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire
