Here Ancestry Guns presents a Cased Pair of antique J. Campbell Scottish Highland Percussion Pistols made circa 1830s to the 1840s by the shop of John Campbell in Doune, Scotland. John Campbell was a Scottish gunmaker known for his disciplined craftsmanship in all of his pistols. His work spanned from the late 17th century into the early to mid-1800s. Campbell’s pistols are characterized by the distinctive features, such as the ram’s horn buttstock, their full metal stock and frame, and elaborate engraving. These pistols were not only functional weapons, but also served as symbols of Scottish identity, often carried by officers in the Highland regiments. The Campbell family of gunmaking, with John Campbell originally at its helm, has a rich history of gunmaking in Doune, Scotland.
Records of pistol use in Scotland first appear around the mid-16th century, when a wheellock pistol was reportedly used in the killing of Mary Queen of Scots’ Italian Secretary David Rizzio in 1566. These early pistols can be seen as the start of a long tradition, especially among the Highland Scots, of being armed to the teeth with firearms. The final evolution of the Highland Belt Pistol is the one most commonly known and often referred to as the “rams horn butt” pistol, as are these, a name which comes from the horn-like scrolls on the butts of these pistols. This style entered the picture in the late 17th century and endured until around the late 19th century, though by the end of this period they were mainly just a decorative part of traditional Highland dress. Examples such as these are almost entirely of all metal construction. This style of pistol is what would have been carried by many members of the Jacobite army under “Bonnie Prince Charlie” Stuart when they were defeated at Culloden. Additionally, this style of pistol would later be adopted by the Highland Regiments of the British Army, with officers generally wearing them tucked under the left arm.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Original gray patina throughout. Thick portions of gold finish remain in areas of low traffic. Both actions are strong. The bores are dark and remain good for their ages. Markings are legible. Sharp floral engravings. Etched panoply arms on the barrels. One pistol has a replacement screw on the belt hook. The case is very good with light dents and dings.
