Originally manufactured by Steyr between 1912 and 1914, this Modelo 1912 rifle was later converted to the Chilean Model 1912/61 NATO configuration, representing one of the most significant modernization programs ever applied to the legendary Mauser system. Chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO, this rifle preserves its original military profile while incorporating the caliber conversion that extended its service life well into the Cold War. The receiver remains crisply marked with the Chilean national crest, "MODELO 1912/61 NATO" designation, the Steyr factory legend, and serial number A6762, giving this rifle outstanding historical and collector appeal.
Built on the proven Mauser 98 system, the Modelo 1912/61 utilizes a controlled-round-feed turn-bolt action with dual front locking lugs, a full-length claw extractor, and a five-round internal magazine loaded via standard stripper clips. Its 23.50-inch military-profile barrel is paired with an adjustable tangent rear sight and protected front post, delivering the rugged reliability, smooth operation, and battlefield accuracy that established the Mauser as the world's benchmark for military bolt-action service rifles.
Chile adopted the Steyr Model 1912 prior to the First World War, with rifles produced in Austria to exceptionally high commercial standards. Decades later, many were arsenal-converted to the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge to meet evolving military requirements while retaining the strength and reliability of the original Mauser action. The clearly marked "MODELO 1912/61 NATO" receiver documents this important chapter in Chilean military history while preserving the superb machining and craftsmanship for which Steyr remains internationally respected.
