Unlike larger firms such as Colt or Remington, Connecticut Arms specialized in a unique patented revolver chambered for the Wood cup-primed metallic cartridge, an ingenious design created to avoid the Rollin White bored-through cylinder patent held by Smith & Wesson. Production was limited to approximately 2,700 revolvers, making these among the scarcer American cartridge revolvers of the 1860s. Because the unusual cup-primed cartridge soon became obsolete after Smith & Wesson's patent expired and conventional rimfire revolvers became widely available, Connecticut Arms ceased revolver production after only a short manufacturing run. Today these revolvers are sought after by collectors of early metallic-cartridge firearms because of their rarity, unusual operating system, and limited production. Cylinder: Patent dates roll marked Production: Approximately 2,700 manufactured Description: This example represents the rare late-production variant of the Connecticut Arms Company Pocket Revolver. It retains the desirable hook-style ejector with the larger rounded operating knob, a feature found on later production revolvers. The revolver is chambered for the unusual .28 caliber cup-primed metallic cartridge, one of the more ingenious but short-lived attempts to bypass Smith & Wesson's monopoly on bored-through revolver cylinders. Instead of loading from the rear, cartridges are inserted from the front of the cylinder, with the recessed primer cup struck by the hammer. 3” raised rib barrel with a very nice bore and very good rifling. The brass frame retains traces of its original silver plating, while much of the plating has worn naturally, revealing an attractive  brass finish. The barrel and cylinder still retain much of the original blue, with remaining blending into a pleasing gray gunmetal finish. Walnut grips remain in good condition with honest age,  handling wear,  and are both serial number stamped.    All parts are original and have matching numbers.  All barrel markings are clear and legible. Mechanically, the revolver functions properly with good timing and lock-up.  A custom black felt-lined display case is included. Collector Interest Because of its limited production, unusual ammunition system, and solid mechanical condition, this Connecticut Arms Company revolver is considerably scarcer than contemporary pocket revolvers from Colt, Smith & Wesson, or Remington. The remaining traces of original finish, matching period features, and desirable late-variant configuration make it a highly collectible example of an uncommon Civil War-era American revolver.   It represents an important step in the evolution of American handgun design and remains highly desirable among collectors of early firearms.
