Unlike conventional revolver ammunition, the 7.62×38R Nagant features its projectile seated entirely inside the elongated case mouth. When fired in an M1895 Nagant revolver, the cylinder advances forward and the extended case mouth seals against the forcing cone, creating the historic gas-seal system that dramatically reduces cylinder-gap gas loss. This distinctive engineering makes authentic Nagant ammunition immediately recognizable and remains one of the most innovative military revolver cartridge designs ever adopted.
