The Winchester Model 1890 became the undisputed king of America's traveling shooting galleries, earning its legendary reputation after digesting millions of rounds with remarkable reliability. Its dominance helped establish the Model 1890 as one of the most successful rimfire repeating rifles ever produced. Before rimfire autoloaders became commonplace, the Model 1890 set the standard by which every other pump-action rimfire was judged. The Browning-designed action still delivers the smooth, precise cycling that made Winchester famous.
One of this rifle's most desirable collector features is its factory takedown configuration paired with the scarce factory special-order 2/3-length tubular magazine. Most Model 1890 rifles were shipped with full-length magazine tubes, making this factory special-order configuration an uncommon and highly recognizable variation that experienced Winchester collectors actively seek. The 8-round magazine, 24.00" octagon barrel, ribbed walnut forearm, folding Beech combination front sight, and folding tang-mounted aperture rear sight combine to create a configuration seldom encountered today.
Collectors will also appreciate the absence of the later Winchester "P" proof mark on the barrel. On an early Model 1890 such as this, the lack of that later proof mark is consistent with an early production barrel configuration and does not indicate a later factory replacement barrel. Chambered in the original .22 WRF cartridge, the rifle offered improved performance over the .22 Short and .22 Long cartridges common during its era while remaining an outstanding choice for small-game hunting and recreational shooting.
