The F.W. Heym Deluxe Game Gun is an outstanding example of traditional German sporting gun craftsmanship from the famed gunmaking center of Suhl, Germany. For well over a century, Friedrich Wilhelm Heym has been recognized as one of Germany's premier makers of fine sporting arms, producing elegant game guns and dangerous game rifles renowned for their quality, reliability, and meticulous workmanship. This lightweight 16 gauge embodies everything that made Suhl firearms famous—robust engineering, tasteful engraving, and refined field handling.
Chambered in 16 gauge with 2.75-inch chambers, the shotgun is fitted with 29.5-inch barrels choked Improved Modified (.033") and Full (.043"). Weighing only 5 pounds 9.7 ounces, it is remarkably light for its barrel length, offering exceptional handling while maintaining a smooth swing for upland birds and driven game. The barrels are fitted with a concave tapering matted rib terminating in a traditional silver front bead.
The shotgun is built on a classic boxlock action featuring double triggers, a Greener cross-bolt, cocking indicators, extractor, and automatic safety, combining the strength and reliability that German sporting guns are known for. Mechanically, it remains in good overall condition. The bores are clear, the action is smooth and locks up tightly, the triggers are crisp, the extractor operates smoothly, and the cocking indicators function exactly as they should.
The case color hardened receiver retains portions of its original finish and is beautifully decorated with elaborate game scenes and flowing acanthus scroll engraving. The left side depicts a bird dog on point with two quail holding tight in the brush, while the underside features a retriever carrying a downed bird through a wooded landscape. The right side portrays three hares racing along a fence line. The remaining surfaces are richly adorned with floral acanthus scroll, enhanced by finely carved fences and sculpted borders that elevate the gun well beyond a standard field grade.
The barrels have been reblued in Suhl style quality, presenting very well while preserving the character of the shotgun. A very minor ding is present on the top right side of the right barrel near the end of the forend. Faint exterior pitting, concentrated beneath the forend, was addressed during the refinishing process and is now largely mitigated. The top rib is elegantly marked "Fr. Wihl. Heym, Suhl" in gold inlay, a distinctive touch found on higher-grade Heym guns.
The shotgun is stocked with beautifully figured deluxe walnut featuring a right-hand cheekpiece and sharp fine checkering on the pistol grip and forend. Premium appointments abound, including a steel pistol grip cap, full horn trigger guard, horn Schnabel forend tip, and horn diamond inlays on the stock flats behind the sculpted action. These traditional details reflect the craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with Germany's finest sporting arms.
